Is Calisthenics Right for Me? An Honest Answer From a Coach
Is Calisthenics Right for Me? An Honest Answer From a Coach
Is calisthenics right for me? For most people, yes — if you want to get stronger, move better, and feel more confident in your body, calisthenics is one of the most effective and joint-friendly ways to train. It scales to any level, from your very first assisted push-up to your first muscle-up. But it’s not right for everyone, and it’s definitely not right for everyone at every gym. In this post I’ll give you the honest version: who thrives with calisthenics, who’s better off with something else, and how we help you figure it out at Calisthenics Amsterdam — before you spend a single euro.
I’m going to be more direct in this post than most gym websites are. After years of coaching hundreds of members in Amsterdam Noord, I know exactly who gets great results with us — and I’ve also told people to their face that we’re not the right fit. Both of those conversations matter.

Who Calisthenics Is Right For
If you recognise yourself in one of these, the answer to “is calisthenics right for me” is almost certainly yes:
You’re starting (or restarting) and don’t want to get hurt. Calisthenics uses your own bodyweight, which means the load is naturally matched to you. Every exercise has an easier and a harder version. You don’t need to survive a barbell class on day one — you build up step by step, with a coach watching your form.
You’ve done regular gyms and got bored or stuck. Rows of machines, no plan, no one who knows your name. Calisthenics gives you skills to work toward — your first pull-up, a handstand, eventually a muscle-up. Progress you can see, not just numbers on a screen.
You want coaching, not just access. This is the big one. We don’t sell workouts — we coach people. If what you’re really looking for is someone who knows your goals, tracks your progress, and adjusts your plan when life happens, that’s exactly what we built our gym around.
You’re busy and need training that fits your life. Sessions are efficient, full-body, and don’t require an hour of setup. That’s why so many of our members are busy professionals and parents — people whose training has to survive contact with real life.
You’re coming back from an injury or a long break. Bodyweight training, properly coached, is one of the safest ways to rebuild. It’s why physios increasingly point people our way — we wrote about that in our post on calisthenics for recovery.
Who Calisthenics Is NOT Right For
Honesty time. Calisthenics — at least the way we do it — is probably not right for you if:
You want to train completely on your own, as cheap as possible. We’re a coaching gym. Every session is guided. If your ideal setup is a €20/month key card and headphones in, a budget gym will make you happier — genuinely.
Your only goal is maximal barbell numbers. If your dream is a 200 kg deadlift, a powerlifting gym is the better home for that goal. Calisthenics builds serious strength — but it’s strength expressed through your own body, not a barbell total.
You’re not ready to show up. No training method survives zero consistency. Our coaching, accountability, and community make consistency much easier — but we can’t do the showing up for you. If you’re not ready to commit to even one or two sessions a week, save your money until you are.
Notice what’s not on this list: your age, your weight, your fitness level, or the fact that you can’t do a single pull-up. None of those disqualify you. Almost everyone starts there.
Is Calisthenics Right for Me If I’m a Complete Beginner?
Yes — and honestly, beginners often progress fastest, because everything is new and every week brings a visible win. This is exactly why we rebuilt how new members start with us.
Instead of dropping you into a group class and hoping for the best, every new member now starts with a Starter Package: 4–6 personal training sessions with your own coach. In those sessions we:
- Learn your history, goals, and any injuries or limitations
- Measure your starting point with an InBody scan so progress is measured, not guessed
- Teach you the foundational movements at your level
- Build the confidence to train hard without fear of doing it wrong
After your Starter Package, you and your coach decide what fits best: continuing with personal training, or a mix of coaching and group sessions. Not sure how often you should come? We covered that in how many times per week you should train calisthenics.
The Real Question: Is This Gym Right for Me?
Here’s something I believe strongly: “is calisthenics right for me” is actually the wrong question to obsess over. The training method matters less than the environment. The best method in the world fails in a gym where nobody knows your name — and an “okay” method thrives with great coaching and a community that expects to see you.
So the better question is: does this gym know my goals, track my progress, and care whether I show up? We wrote a whole post on what makes Calisthenics Amsterdam different, but the short version: small groups, coaches who know every member by name, measurable results, and 285+ Google reviews at 4.9 stars from people who were once exactly where you are now.
